Dear reader,
you may know that I also blog on Medium. My main focus there is mental health and neurodivergence, but I also write about other interesting topics.
So, what is Medium?
Simply put, it’s a blogging site. But it’s also something more than that. It’s kind of a text-based social network – slower and more in-depth than Facebook and the others. You can follow your favorite authors, highlight favorite quotes, make lists of the blog posts you like, leave claps and comments.
Medium is for reading about everything from emotions to rocket science
Medium has an immense amount of authors that write on very diverse topics. You can read it for technical information. You can read it to learn about online business (I do, and it helps.) You can read it for the human stories to relate to. You can find information there on how to improve your writing. You can find marketing advice. You can find relationship advice. The Medium algorithm will pick articles similar in topic to what you have read and suggest them in your feed.
Medium is a subscription-based model: There are no ads, but instead, people pay a small monthly subscription fee to get behind the paywall. Some authors choose not to put their articles behind a paywall, but most do. Every month, you can read 3 of the posts behind the paywall for free and if you want to read more, you need to subscribe. Then you will have unlimited access to all articles on Medium.
Medium is for writing your heart (and brain) out
Have you ever wanted to start a blog, but don’t understand the tech stuff? Medium has you covered. It has a simple and clean interface and everyone can create an account there. You can even have multiple accounts for different types of text, if you like.
The beauty of Medium is that you don’t need to specialize. You can write about marketing and about your mental illness. You can write about writing and about relationships. And you can change your focus at any time. You can blog about a variety of topics and everything you write has an audience somewhere on the site.
You don’t need to pick one topic and stick with it for the foreseeable future – especially when you are still finding out what works for you. Whatever you choose, there will be people on Medium who want to read exactly about that!
You can also submit blog posts to Medium publications, which means that besides appearing on your blog, potential readers will also be able to see them on the publications page. That means a built-in audience!
Medium is for earning money and finding your niche
While you probably won’t make a full-time income from Medium (although some of the people on the site do!), it’s nice to get paid for a blog that you would write anyways. According to the new rules, you need to have 100 followers before you can apply to Medium Partner Program. Don’t worry, it takes only some time spent blogging (it was a few months for me) and you will have them in no time.
You don’t need to have a Medium subscription for this, but it’s very useful because it enables you to see what others are writing, which formats and topics of articles are successful, and read a lot of advice from other Medium authors.
You can use Medium as a market research tool. Write articles on different topics for a time, then see which ones of them get the most reads. That means there is an interest that you can tap into. I found that what works the best is finding a niche (for me it’s neurodivergence) and then finding a sub-niche inside that niche (AuDHD for me.)
The best part is that you can promote your own products and services, or build your brand, and get paid for it at the same time!
Happy reading (and writing)!
Helen
